Bureau of Meteorology – Annual R&D Workshop 7 – 10 August 2023

07/08/2023 - 10/08/2023

The 2023 Bureau of Meteorology Annual Research and Development Workshop will be held in Melbourne 7–10 August 2023. Registrations open Monday 3 July 2023. It is free and open to all. Presentations are by invitation but submissions for posters and lightning talks are encouraged and welcome (see red box below).

This year’s theme will be ‘Towards seamless science and services’. We are bringing together experts to discuss the latest science and thinking to support seamless weather and climate services that meet increasingly sophisticated user needs.

The growing likelihood of high impact weather events affecting Australian society, government, industry and the natural environment, such as those resulting in the 2019–20 Black Summer fires and the 2021–22 floods, brings an urgent need to look at measures to reduce the risks and impact of natural hazards.

The vision of the Bureau and its partners is to provide seamless and targeted information and services, from past observations to multi-decadal climate projections, to help inform better preparation for, response to and recovery from high impact weather events. In this context, ‘seamless’ refers to the integration and consistency of data, models, products, services and insights that enable timely and informed decisions by customers everywhere.

The workshop will include in-person and hybrid sessions. Topics will cover:

  • innovative modelling and data analysis methods,
  • user requirements,
  • how we can work together to provide seamless services that are consistent and integrated and inform decision-making nationwide and across diverse sectors.

New announcement! A virtual poster session using the Gather.Town platform will be held on the Wednesday afternoon, 9 August. This session is open to all Workshop participants. There will be optional lightning talks throughout the Workshop proceedings to draw attention to your poster.
