About Us

The Department of Planning and Environment’s (DPE) vision is to create thriving environments, communities and economies for the people of New South Wales. We strive to be a high-performing, world-class public service organisation that celebrates and reflects the full diversity of the community we serve and seeks to embed Aboriginal cultural awareness and knowledge throughout the department.

In our inclusive and accessible workplace, differences are embraced, contributions are valued, and everyone has a sense of connection and belonging. DPE supports various employee affinity groups, practice flexible working, offer job share and workplace adjustments. We are committed to the Premier’s Priorities and welcome applications from all.

We work with multiple agencies within the NSW Government, in other states, and with businesses and communities to better understand our atmospheric environment and to assist decision makers dealing with the complex policy issues of air pollution and climate change.

Our research, data, information and knowledge are pivotal to helping the NSW Government achieve its objectives of:

  • Improving air quality across NSW (Clean Air for NSW)
  • Achieving net zero emissions by 2050 (Climate Change Policy Framework)
  • Ensuring NSW is more resilient to a changing climate (Climate Change Policy Framework)

We operate the largest and most comprehensive air quality monitoring network in Australia, with more than 90 stations across the state providing hourly updated air quality readings to the web.
We provide the NSW Government’s flagship regional climate modelling (NARCliM) and assist stakeholders across the NSW, ACT and South Australian Governments, businesses and communities to understand climate change, climate risks and their potential impacts.

We provide the core climate science that underpins the recently released NSW Adaptation Strategy. This integrates climate impact science across multiple disciplines including natural hazards, hydrological modelling, biodiversity and landscape modelling and integrated risk management.
