SUMMARY:AMOS 2020
DESCRIPTION:The Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society (AMOS) is delighted to host the joint 27th AMOS Annual Meeting and International Conference on Indian Ocean Meteorology and Oceanography (AMOS 2020) in Fremantle\, Western Australia\, from 10–14 February 2020. \nThe AMOS Annual Meeting is Australia’s pre-eminent meeting profiling the latest findings and applications of our sciences.  AMOS 2020 will have over 40 thematic sessions covering topics in meteorology\, oceanography and other climate sciences under the broad themes of weather\, ocean processes\, atmospheric processes\, climate\, land surface processes\, Antarctic science\, climate services and community engagement.  This year we will be highlighting the current research in Indian oceanography and meteorology with a special conference program attached to the general AMOS Annual Meeting proceedings.  In addition to a focus on the Indian Ocean\, the conference will also have a strong water theme.  The Fremantle and neighbouring Perth areas are adapting to a decrease in freshwater supply. This\, coupled with the recent drought conditions in the southeast of the continent\, means managing water is an urgent topic. \nVisit the AMOS 2020 website for more information. \nWe hope you can join us for AMOS 2020 in Fremantle!   \nSave the dates:\n10-14 February 2020\nEsplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges \n

SUMMARY:AMOS SA - National Science Week - Our Climate: Trends and Drivers
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\nOur climate is not just governed by the sun and greenhouse gases. It has many drivers\, from atmospheric circulation to ocean currents. Even the Antarctic influences our local climate! Come and hear about this complex system and be ready to ask our four experts your questions. \n\n\n\nOur climate is changing. In the last ten years many long-term temperature and climate extremes have occurred in South Australia. So\, what drives our climate and why are we breaking records so frequently? Darren Ray\, resident climatologist at the Bureau of Meteorology and Jochen Kaempf\, Associate Professor of Oceanography at Flinders University will describe how the atmosphere\, ocean and the Antarctic all play critical roles in our climate system. \n\n\n\nWith intimate knowledge of the complex forces that now demand our attention\, our experts will explain what our climate drivers are and how they’re changing. The audience will be encouraged to participate in an extended question and answer session related to the science of climate variability and climate change. The Forum panel will consist of our two speakers along with Beth Walton\, Climatologist and John Nairn (Chair)\, State Manager\, Bureau of Meteorology. \n\n\n\nOur four experts will interest senior high school as well university students and the general public – in fact anybody interested in our climate and what it’s doing. This is a rare opportunity to attend in Adelaide a live discussion of a critical topic. \n\n\n\nClick here to register \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:AMOS WA - An evening with WA authors of the IPCC Special Report 1.5°C Global Warming
DESCRIPTION:On the 8th October\, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change [IPCC] Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C was approved by governments. It has since made global headlines\, featuring on the front pages of the New York Times\, Washington Post\, BBC\, ABC and The Guardian (amongst many others). \nNinety-one authors and review editors from 40 countries prepared the IPCC report in response to an invitation from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) when it adopted the Paris Agreement in 2015. The report assesses global warming of 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels and related global greenhouse gas emission pathways in the context of strengthening the global response to the threat of climate change\, sustainable development\, and efforts to eradicate poverty. \nCome join us on Nov 1st to hear from five Western Australian scientists who contributed to this historic report: \nDr. Neville Ellis and Ms Karen Paiva Henrique(The University of Western Australia): Background to the IPCC Special Report 1.5°C \nDr. Jatin Kala (Murdoch University): What is 1.5°C and why do we care? \nProf. Peter Newman (Curtin University): 1.5°C: what is the world doing and what more can it do? \nProf. Petra Tschakert (The University of Western Australia): What does 1.5°C mean for people\, sustainable development and poverty eradication? \nThe authors will discuss key findings and the implications for current and future generations. This will be followed by a Q&A session\, as well as drinks and nibbles. \nThe event promises to be a landmark moment for the Western Australian science community. \nLOCATION: Social Science Lecture Theatre\, The University of Western Australia.  \nTIME: 5.30 to 7pm. (Doors at 5.15pm). Drinks and nibbles provided after in the University Club of Western Australia. \nRSVP essential. Spaces limited – register soon! \nFor further information contact Dr. Neville Ellis (Neville.ellis@uwa.edu.au) \n

SUMMARY:AMOS Melbourne Centre Annual Workshop - Remote Sensing - Satellite to Ground
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Society of Victoria | 8 La Trobe Street | Melbourne\, VIC 3000 | Australia\nThursday\, 25 October 2018 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm (AEDT)\nRemote sensing of earth has come a long way from nineteenth century aerial photography to latest UAV remote sensing. In general sense\, remote sensing at present means satellite remote sensing and it started with the launch of Landsat-1 in 1972 for civilian applications. In 1979\, Seasat-1 became the first RADAR imaging satellite and started a new domain of remote sensing. Over the following years\, the field of satellite remote sensing has seen many exciting new developments such as new higher spatial resolution optical and radar systems\, hyperspectral sensors\, important by-products such as digital elevation model (DEM)\, furthermore development of new processing techniques using machine learning. At present\, Satellite series like Sentinel and Planet Labs are revolutionizing the sector by providing high spatial\, spectral and temporal resolution data either free or at very low cost. \nThe integration of different types of remote sensing data\, along with ancillary data from different sources\, is driving many new scientific investigations ranging from estimating forest biomass to mapping of Mars surface for finding minerals. Remote sensing data is also helping to develop a better geographical information system (GIS) which in turn can be used for education\, land management\, natural resources management\, environmental and aeronautical applications. This workshop will update the knowledge of these topics. \n  \nREGISTER AT: https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/remote-sensing-satellite-to-ground-tickets-51277848425?aff=ebdssbdestsearch \n

SUMMARY:AMOS-Q Event: A southeast change severe thunderstorm climatology for Brisbane\, with forecasting applications
DESCRIPTION:AMOS-Q invites you to a presentation by Tony Wedd \nTony is an operational severe weather forecaster and manager of the severe weather section in the Queensland regional office of the Bureau of Meteorology. \nSome of the worst thunderstorms to affect SE QLD occur with SE’ly wind changes moving north along the coast. These storms can be difficult to predict\, as environmental conditions give little indication of the severity of the storms to follow. \nWe identify a number of parameters that together provide good guidance discriminating between high-end severe thunderstorm events and other events\, at useful forecasting lead times of several hours or more. \nNot in Brisbane? Join us on:\ncqu.zoom.us/j/9528315242 \nRSVP to: m.hewson@cqu.edu.au by 20th September 2018. \n

SUMMARY:Delivering the 2018 Victorian State of the Environment Report (AMOS and Royal Society of Victoria)
DESCRIPTION:The 2018 State of the Environment report will answer critical questions about the health of Victoria’s natural environment. What has changed in five years? How does Victoria’s air and water quality measure up? What is the condition of our state’s unique flora and fauna? How healthy are our soils and waterways? How do we transition to a contemporary waste management and resource recovery system? What are the trends and future projections for Victoria’s changing climate? \nThis talk provides an opportunity for the Victorian public to hear Victoria’s Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability\, Dr Gillian Sparkes present on the Interim SoE 2018 report and our progress towards answering those important questions in the final release – the key policy and management issues\, and the data and information challenges\, for each of the twelve themes: air quality\, climate\, biodiversity\, land health\, forests\, fire\, water resources\, water quality\, coastal and marine environments\, waste and resource recovery\, energy and transport. Dr Sparkes will also address the emerging opportunity to adopt the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals as a framework for monitoring Victoria’s progress against critical environmental targets over the next decade. \n

SUMMARY:Sunburnt Country: The History and Future of Climate Change in Australia
DESCRIPTION:\n\nWhat was Australia’s climate like before official weather records began? How do scientists use tree-rings\, ice cores and tropical corals to retrace the past? What do Indigenous seasonal calendars reveal? And what do settler diary entries about rainfall\, droughts\, bushfires and snowfalls tell us about natural climate cycles? \nDr Joëlle Gergis will be in Canberra to discuss her new book\, Sunburnt Country. The book pieces together Australia’s climate history for the first time. It uncovers a continent long vulnerable to climate extremes and variability. It gives an unparalleled perspective on how human activities have altered patterns that have been with us for millions of years\, and what climate change looks like in our own backyard. \nSunburnt Country highlights the impact of a warming planet on Australian lifestyles and ecosystems and the power we all have to shape future life on Earth. \nDr Gergis will discuss the book with Associate Professor Nerilie Abram (Research School of Earth Sciences\, ANU) followed by audience Q&A. \nAbout Dr Joëlle Gergis \nDr Joëlle Gergis is an award-winning climate scientist and writer from the University of Melbourne. \n\n\n
