MODIS Multichannel Sattelite Imagery In Bureau Operations

Science Tea presentation

Thursday 5th May 2011, Bureau of Meteorology

Adapting MODIS Single and Multichannel Satellite Imagery to Bureau Operations

Bodo Zeschke and Christopher Down
BMTC / OEB Satellite Ops

In this presentation we will discuss work that has been done in adapting single and multichannel MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellite data for use in Bureau operations.
We will highlight advantages in using single channel MODIS data over satellite imagery presently used at the Bureau.

A brief overview of METEOSAT Red-Green-Blue (RGB) multichannel enhancement algorithms as derived by EUMETSAT (European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites) for the detection of upper air mass and potential vorticity and for severe storm, fog and dust identification and nowcasting is presented.

We will describe work that has been conducted in adapting this to MODIS data, with Australian examples. This enhanced imagery is presently used at the Victorian Regional Forecasting Office. Finally, we will introduce web resources that have been set up in viewing Melbourne and Darwin ingested real-time MODIS imagery. These are presently utilised operationally at the Darwin Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre.
