History of Meteorology and Oceanography in Australia

The Society is collecting and making available through this website documents relevant to the history of our science and its organisation in Australia.

In 1998 the Society celebrated its 10^th anniversary and the 25^th anniversary of the formation of its precursor the Australian Branch of the Royal Meteorological Society. Several articles on the history were published in the August 1998 AMOS Bulletin. 

John Garratt wrote Toward Independence: An Australian Branch of the Royal Meteorological Society is formed.

David Karoly wrote The Transition from the RMS(AB) to AMOS Ten Years On.

Val Jemmeson wrote The Society Today: An Overview.

In 2001 the Bureau of Meteorology published A Hundred  Years of Science and Service : Australian Meteorology  Through the Twentieth Century.

There is also A Brief History of the Bureau of Meteorology. 

Also in 2001 the Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre produced a history of Federation and Meteorology.
